Is Houndsfield Primary School an energy efficient power school? The pupils of year 6 are investigating to find out!
Today Rowling Class began their second Terrific Scientific investigation with the BBC. We discussed as a class if we thought Houndsfield wasted energy or did well as keeping our meter readings down.
When then split into groups and investigated around school. But what were we looking for?
Pupils were on the look out for open windows when the heating is on, how we use technology in the classroom and are we turning off the lights when we don’t need them.
Unfortunately, we found that our school would only score a Bronze award for power meaning we now need to spring into action and begin taking action to reduce our power usage and our efficiency at doing so! We have created a list of actions for classes to think about in order to be more efficient – it is everyone’s job to help!
Here are the suggestions we have made:
- Turning off the lights when you don’t need them or are not in the room
- Turning off the interactive whiteboard if it isn’t being used for that lesson
- Turning off sockets when you are not using the appliances – this was particularly bad in the staff rooms!
- Turning the heating off instead of opening the windows
We will be back after half term to investigate if pupils and staff have been following our tips and we will see if we have managed to make small changes that make a big difference to the energy use of our school!
