The Year 5 Reading Booster Group is coming up to it’s last week before the summer holidays. 12 children have been attending our booster group every week over the last term to learn how to improve their reading and understand the texts they are given.
In our sessions we have learned about how to summarise, use evidence from the text, infer, predict, decipher the meaning of unknown words and how to draw a story-board. Our texts have ranged from ‘The Little Red Hen’ to ‘Odysseus’, ‘Varjak Paw’ and ‘Goodnight Mr Tom’, to name a few.
Has this helped our children?
This is what some of them have said:
” Drawing a story-board helps me understand the order of what has happened in the story!”
“I can use my background knowledge to help me understand why the characters do things.”
“I love reading new stories now because I can understand how to figure out what new words mean.”
“I like that my teacher can explain how to answer a question, I can use this in my tests.”
I asked the children “Will you read more or less now?”
“More!” they all replied.
Well done to the children who have put in the extra effort to take control of their learning journey.
