It’s an exciting time for children who enjoy music at Houndsfield Primary School. Lots of new things are happening that will ensure every child has the best possible opportunity to develop their musical talents.
Houndsfield Music Room
One of the biggest changes is that Houndsfield now has a new music room. Having a dedicated space means that children are learning music in stimulating environment with all of the necessary resources around them. As new instruments arrive and the room develops it’s sure to be one of the most popular classrooms in the school.
In September we started singing assemblies for the first time. Children have been learning to sing lots of new songs, our current repertoire includes Spider Flies, Funga Alafia, Harmony Blues, and Moving to the Music. Children in phases 2 & 3 have just begun to learn You’ve Got a Friend in Me from the film Toy Story, which has been an immediate hit.Aside from singing, children have the opportunity to hear each other play instruments, and I’m excited about some of the professional musicians who will be visiting our school in the near future.
Hounsfield have teamed up with Musical Futures to help develop a new approach to class music teaching. Over the coming year children in years 5 & 6 will be learning to play guitar, keyboard, bass and drums and starting their own rock bands. We are hopeful that this approach will have the children really enthusing about their music lessons, and may even uncover one or two stars of the future.
Over the coming year we want even more children learning musical instruments. Year 4 children are learning steel pans, and year 5 clarinet and sax this academic year. We are keen for even more children to be enjoying the fun of music, and want to ensure that every child who wishes to learn an instrument has the opportunity to do so. We will be launching an orchestra later in the year and need lots and lots of children playing instruments, so it’s time to wipe the dust off of any old instruments that might be lying around and get ready to make lots of noise!
